What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique way to identify a computer on the internet. Instead of having to know that your favourite web site has an address of 202.61.170.13 you can remember http://www.somecompany.com.au/

No two organisations can have the same domain name and as such some type of central authority usually allocates names in order to arbitrate who gets each domain name. The DNS also holds information such as where mail should be delivered for a certain address; these are called Mail Exchange (MX) records.

Why do I need a Domain Name?

A Domain Name identifies your organisation on the internet. It allows customers and people who will be accessing any resources that your organisation makes available on the internet to be able to easily remember your address and visit your site or send you email. A domain name gives you peace of mind to know that there will always only be one address for you on the Internet. A domain name will provide a professional appearance for your organisation on the internet.

Once you have a domain name you will be able to use email of the form:
emailname@yourcompany.com.au

You will also be able to advertise your website as:
http://www.yourcompany.com.au

These are essential items for a successful internet presence.

   Registration and Delegation

Getting a domain name means that you must apply to a registry for one, different registries accommodate different domain name hierarchies. The different hierarchies cater for different needs and as such registries in Australia have rules that apply to applications. Under 'com.au' for example the name you apply for must be your registered company/business name or a logical derivative of it - the same goes for 'net.au' but this hierarchy applies more to 'providers of network services' (please consult with us to aid in your choice of domain name).

Once you have successfully registered your domain name you must then delegate it - this is the process where you actually make it work on the internet. This requires somebody who runs a Domain Name Server to modify its configuration so that your name can be addressed to it. Until this happens your name will not work. There are good reasons for registering your name but not delegating it. If you plan to do something on the internet in the future but are not ready too just yet, you can register your name to prevent it being taken by somebody else.

The process of delegation also means maintaining the server and carrying out maintenance on the records as required. For further information please contact us, or please fill in the domain form to get your domain name
